Relay Pumping From A Draft
FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 31/AUG1 2023
Step by Step Guide
Let's take a top down look at how to Relay Pump from a Draft.
No two scenarios are the same, so as a skilled operator, you may have to think outside of the box when drafting.
There are 3 main components that we will cover on Monday/Tuesday
4-5 People Per Group and approx 30 minutes on each topic
Drafting
Pumping/Relay
Handline & Ground Monitors
DRAFTING - STATIC WATER SOURCE
Arrive on Scene, Engage Pump
Position vehicle so your able to REACH / CONNECT TO YOUR WATER SOURCE
Vehicle must be completely stopped & air brake applied (non pump-n-roll)
Engage drive between pump and truck (eg. left green light in image)
Engage pump its self (eg. right green light in image)
Once both green lights are lit in this example, your pump is running.
You may see your Speedometer come ALIVE as it thinks your truck is moving but it is powering the pump now, not the wheels
Create a Safe Workzone
Wheels Chocked
Vehicle Positioned properly
Class 2 Safety Vest / PFD
Signage, Pylon's, Lighting?
Always 3 Points of Contact
Get Water
Connect proper strainer to hard suction, ensure all connections are tight. (drafting and air don't mix)
Connect Hard Suction to Master Intake Port on Truck
Increase Engine RPM to between 1000 - 1200
PULL PRIME & OPEN INTAKE VALVE - No Longer than 30 seconds at a time
Establish Vacuum (Compound / Intake Gauge), watch water come up your hard suction
Verify water flow by opening Tank Fill / Recirculate
Fill Porta Tanks, On Board Tanks and/or Standby to supply water to the attack pumper (relay)
RELAY PUMPING - SOURCE TRUCK
sET uP sUPPLY lINE
Connect your Source Tanker to the Attack Pumper
Use High-Vol 100mm Lines for Connection (less friction over distance)
Open your Recirculation valve while not relaying to allow water to circulate through your pump etc.
*NOTE: If distance is great, you may need an additional 'RELAY' pumper in between supply and attack
WAIT for your attack pumper to give you commands
They Could be, but not limited to...
'Source' Give Me Water' (usually 350-500 kpa to start from static supply (drafting))
'Source' Up 200 kpa'
'Source' down 500 kpa'
'Source' Shut Down Water'
Always watch your leftover vacuum on your supply tanker, if it reaches -85 KPA your supply is maxed out.
Max Lift for Drafting approx 6 Meters or 18 Feet
RELAY PUMPING - ATTACK TRUCK
ARRIVE ON SCENE, ENGAGE YOUR PUMP, CREATE A SAFE WORKZONE
open INITIAL wATER FOR SUPPRESSION
Open Tank to Pump
Communicate and Open Attack LIne for Suppression
In RPM MODE,
Set first lines pressure using calculations from OFC Pump Chart
Establish good smooth flow
Switch Pump to PRESSURE MODE
Communicate and Open 2nd Attack Line for Suppression
Establish good smooth flow, your engine RPM will increase as needed for second attack like
Check all line pressures, your pump and govenger should be set to highest attack line pressure and then you should 'throttle' back any lines that require less pressure.
Ask Supply to give you water
Ask your supply tanker to 'Give you water'
This should come at their IDLE pump pressure, usually around 350-500 kpa.
Once your LDH (High-Vol 100MM) is charged, bleed the air and open the supply.
This pressure should reduce the efforts of the engine and reduce rpm (centrifugal pump utilizes incoming pressure)
Watch your Compound Gauge / Vacuum Gauge that your residual pressure does not drop below 200 kpa.
When you need water, ask supply for it...
Supply up 200 Kpa
Supply Up 500 Kpa
This is all based off your OFC Pump calculations for the additional suppression lines you are supplying
You are now Relay Pumping from a Draft!

Completion of this and attendance at the practical training night will complete this learning component and skill
HAND LINES / GROUND MONITOR
We will be using 3 types of appliances this week
MAnual-Adjustable Flow Combination Nozzle
GREAT FOR FOAM APPLICATION
MANY DIFFERENT USES
EASY TO OPERATE
REQUIRES PUMP OPERATOR TO ALWAYS KNOW WHAT THE NOZZLE IS SET AT TO ENSURE PROPER PATTERN AND FF SAFETY
aUTOMATIC fLOW - cOMBINATION & sMOOTH bORE
CAN OPERATE AS COMBO OR STRAIGHT BORE
CAN BE USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT USES, CAN PENETRATE THROUGH DRYWALL WITH EASE
PUMP OPERATOR MUST KNOW WHAT ITS BEING USED AS
CAN HELP REDUCE THE STRAIN ON THE ATTACK PUMP, AS IT WILL OPERATE AT 350 KPA VS COMBO AT 700 KPA
gROUND mONITOR
CAN OPERATE AS COMBO OR STRAIGHT BORE
HIGH FLOW
MANY DIFFERENT USES
PUMP OPERATORS MUST BE AWARE, YOU CAN EASILY FLOW 1500L/M PLUS OUT OF THIS TYPE OF DIVICE AND IT WILL EMPTY YOUR TRUCK QUICKLY
GREAT FOR INITAL ATACK (FOAM OR NOT) WHEN MOUNTED TO BUMPER OR TRUCK BED
